Brooklyn Study Hall: 9 students, 4 booked exams in Bed-Stuy
On May 20, Emerge Career ran our biggest Study Hall of the week in partnership with Neighbors In Action in Bed-Stuy. Nine students came through to drill the New York Class A permit material — and four of them already have their exam dates on the calendar, including George, who passed his on May 13.
This is what consistent, free CDL permit prep in Brooklyn is supposed to look like: a room of justice-impacted New Yorkers working through air brakes, combination vehicles, and general knowledge questions, then leaving with a date, a location, and a plan.
The room
Most of the value people called out was unglamorous: repetition, refreshing common knowledge, getting clear on air brakes. Elizabeth and Raymond both flagged air brakes as their breakthrough. Justin called the session "common knowledge refreshing." Jace named "repetition" as what worked for him. George summed up the whole pitch in one line: "the realization that the process works."
One piece of constructive feedback we're going to act on: Douglas pointed out that students without reliable WiFi can't always rewatch the training videos at home. We're working on a print-and-go version of the most-missed material so people can study on the train.
From Study Hall to road
If you're new to all this and not sure where the permit fits in, the short version is: pass the written test, get the CLP, train behind the wheel, get the Class A, get hired. Our CDL overview walks through the full path. Before test day you'll also need to pass a DOT physical — worth knowing what that involves before you book it.
