Harlem Study Hall: CDL permit prep on West 126th

Harlem Study Hall on 5/21 drew three students at different stages of the CDL path — including one already permitted and back to help newer students review.

Harlem Study Hall: CDL permit prep on West 126th

On May 21, Emerge Career ran our weekly Harlem Study Hall on West 126th Street. Three students at three very different stages of the CDL path: one studying, one ready to test within the week, and one who already has his Class A permit and came back to help review.

That last part is the thing we're proudest of. Femi got his permit through Emerge and showed up to Study Hall anyway — to drill questions with people who haven't gotten there yet. Reentry workforce programs talk a lot about community; this is what it actually looks like.

What the room said

Daequan told us the most useful part of the session was "the patience and understanding given on how to operate the vehicles, also on how the vehicles operate." He's ready to schedule his permit exam within the week. Harold is closing in too — he flagged he's almost ready, two-to-three weeks out from booking.

Femi, already permitted, called out the value of having someone in the room who can explain the material clearly and keep pace with both newer and more advanced students. That kind of senior peer presence is exactly what makes a Study Hall work versus just sitting alone with a practice app.

Harlem is a CDL town and most people don't know it

Manhattan has more delivery and freight movement per square mile than almost anywhere on earth, and a huge share of those routes are run by drivers who live in Harlem and the Bronx. The jobs are here. The bottleneck is the permit. If you're not sure how to schedule yours, start with our CLP scheduling walkthrough.
