Queens Study Hall: CDL permit prep in Long Island City
On May 19, Emerge Career ran our weekly CDL Study Hall at Ravenswood Community Learning Center in Long Island City. Three students came through to drill general knowledge, air brakes, and combination vehicles ahead of the New York State Class A permit exam.
Long Island City sits at the front door of one of the busiest freight corridors in the country. Drivers running between New Jersey, Queens, and Long Island move billions of dollars of goods every week — and most of those jobs sit empty because the industry can't fill seats fast enough. That's the gap our free CDL training program is built to close, especially for justice-impacted New Yorkers who've been told the door is shut.
What the room looked like
Kaseem walked in still figuring out his timeline and left with his permit exam scheduled for the very next day. He said the session was about "building confidence and taking the CDL permit — more knowledge and explanations." Salvatore came in for the question drill and told us he's ready to test within the week. Howard is working around a hip replacement scheduled for July but wanted to lock in his understanding of the program so he can hit the ground running on the other side.
Booking your permit exam is the first concrete step toward a CDL. If you're not sure how that works, our walkthrough on scheduling your CLP exam in New York covers everything from the DMV portal to what documents you need on test day.
