Bronx Study Hall with Bronx HYPE: CDL Permit Prep in Mott Haven

On Tuesday, May 5, we ran our Bronx Study Hall in partnership with Bronx HYPE in Mott Haven. Five students sat down with our instructor from 4 to 6pm, worked through CLP practice questions, ate pizza, and walked out with a clearer sense of where they stand on the Class A permit exam.

Mott Haven is one of the highest-need pockets for CDL training in the city. Foot traffic in and out of the South Bronx for warehouse and trucking work is constant, and Bronx HYPE has been one of our most reliable partners for getting justice-impacted residents in the door.

Where the students are at

Most of the room is still in the studying phase- four of the five students told us they need another three to four weeks of prep before they're ready to book the exam. That's exactly the right read. The CLP exam is not something to walk into cold, and our Study Halls exist precisely to give students live reps on the question categories that actually show up on test day.

One student told us the most valuable thing was "the opportunity in general"- that's the line we hear most often from people in reentry. The permit is the first concrete step toward a $70K+ trucking career, and a free Study Hall room two blocks from home makes that step legible.

What's next for these students

From here, students will keep drilling practice questions, knock out their DOT physical, and book their CLP exam through the NY DMV. We'll see most of them back in the Bronx room next Tuesday. For anyone newer to the process, our CDL eligibility breakdown is the right starting point.
