Harlem Study Hall: A Tight Four-Person CDL Permit Room
On Thursday, May 7, we ran our Harlem Study Hall from 2 to 4pm out of our own space on West 126th Street. Four students sat down with our instructor, worked through CLP practice questions, and ate pizza. It was a small room- and according to the students in it, that's exactly why it worked.
One student, Vincent, told us the smaller group "led to more uninterrupted detailed explanations and less distractions" and said he'd prefer rooms like this going forward. Another, Ahmad, said the most valuable thing was "clearing confusion"- and that he's ready to take the CLP within a week. That's the goal of every Study Hall: send students out closer to test-ready than they walked in.
The case for small rooms
Big rooms are good for momentum and energy. Small rooms are good for surgery- getting into the exact two or three question categories a specific student keeps missing. With four students, our instructor was able to slow down on combination vehicles, air brakes, and the trickier general knowledge questions without losing anyone. Half the room had their exam already booked; one student has their CLP exam on May 15.
If you're prepping for your own exam, our CLP test day tips are the right read the night before.
Why Harlem
Harlem is home base for a lot of our students + Emerge runs out of West 126th Street, and we keep a weekly Study Hall on the Harlem calendar specifically so neighborhood residents have a no-friction way to drop in for permit prep. We also run rooms in Queens, the Bronx, and Brooklyn most weeks, but Harlem stays the anchor.
Free CDL training in Manhattan
Emerge Career is a free CDL training program for justice-impacted New Yorkers. The permit, the road training, the job placement — all of it, no cost. If you're in Harlem or anywhere in Manhattan and you want a Class A CDL, read more about the NYC program and apply here. Next Harlem Study Hall is on the calendar — come through.
