Brooklyn Study Hall at NIA: CDL Permit Prep in Bed-Stuy
On Wednesday, May 6, we ran our Brooklyn Study Hall in partnership with Neighbors In Action (NIA) in Bed-Stuy. Six students worked through CLP practice questions from 4 to 6pm, two of them booked their permit exam in the room, and another two walked in with exams already on the calendar.
The Bed-Stuy room is one of our strongest weekly slots. NIA has built deep roots in Central Brooklyn around reentry, and the CDL training cohort that flows through their space tends to be locked-in by the time they sit down for Study Hall.
What students said worked
Two pieces of feedback stood out. One student called the new CDL study guide handbook "very very easy to use". We rebuilt those materials over the last quarter specifically because the old DMV manual wasn't getting students over the line. Another flagged "learning about tractors", meaning the combination vehicles section, as the most useful part of the night. That section is consistently one of the highest-miss categories on the Class A CLP, so the time spent there pays off directly.
Justin booked his exam in the room for May 12. One student is dealing with their DOT physical before they can move forward- we have a DOT physical guide that covers what to expect and how to find a certified examiner.
Why Bed-Stuy
Central Brooklyn has a deep pool of residents who qualify for our program and a real need for stable, well-paying work. The trucking industry is paying $70K+ to start in this region for over-the-road and regional Class A work, and most of our Brooklyn graduates end up driving routes that bring them home most nights.
Free CDL training in Brooklyn
Emerge Career is a free CDL training program built for justice-impacted New Yorkers. We cover the permit, the road skills, and job placement — no tuition, no catch. If you're in Brooklyn and you want a Class A CDL, read more about the NYC program and apply here. Our next Brooklyn Study Hall is on the calendar.
