A CDL training program teaches you to drive a commercial truck and gets you ready for the licensing tests. Federal law requires you to finish one before you can take the road test. This guide explains what a program includes, what it costs, and how to tell a good one from a bad one.
What is a CDL training program?
Since February 7, 2022, federal law requires Entry-Level Driver Training, or ELDT, before you can take the road test for a first Class A or Class B CDL. The training has to come from a provider listed on the FMCSA Training Provider Registry. A school that is not on the registry cannot qualify you, no matter what it charges.
A real program has two parts. Theory covers the rules, safety, and everything on the knowledge tests. Behind-the-wheel covers the pre-trip inspection, backing and maneuvering on a practice range, and driving on public roads.

What are my options for CDL training?
There are four ways to get trained.

Company-sponsored training is a loan with your time as collateral. Before you sign one, read the contract section of CDL jobs with no experience.
How much does CDL training cost?
Private schools generally run several thousand dollars, and tuition is the number that stops most people. State fees are small next to it. New York charges $10 for the permit test and $40 for the road test.

What does a real CDL training program look like?
Here is our Next Mile NYC program, in the words of the officials who fund it and the students who went through it:
Next Mile NYC is our largest program, run with the New York City Mayor's Office of Criminal Justice. Students prepare for the permit test in the Emerge app, practice at in-person study halls in public libraries across the city, and do behind-the-wheel training at licensed schools.

How long does CDL training take?
Our program runs about four months, online plus hands-on. The license steps inside it, from the permit test to a license in hand, take seven to twelve weeks if your medical exam is clean and you can get test appointments.
Full-time private schools can move faster. Community college programs usually take longer because they follow the school calendar.
How do I check if a program is legitimate?
Run five checks before you pay anyone.
- Find the school on the FMCSA Training Provider Registry. Not listed means the training does not count. The check takes two minutes.
- Get the full price in writing. Tuition, permit fees, the DOT physical, endorsements, and retest fees.
- Ask how many behind-the-wheel hours you get, and whether you share the truck with other students during them.
- Ask for placement numbers with dates. "We work with many carriers" is not a number.
- Read the contract before orientation. If the school will not send it, walk away.
Can I get CDL training with a criminal record?
Yes. Federal law only bars you from a CDL if you used a commercial vehicle in your offense. Next Mile NYC was built for justice-involved New Yorkers, and city officials fund it because it works.

What happens after the program?
The license is the halfway point. The job is the goal, and this is where programs separate.
92% of our students get hired within six months. We run hiring events where employers meet graduates in person. At one Brooklyn event, Interstate Waste Services collected more than 30 resumes and hired two graduates within weeks. An MTA recruiter left another event with 10 resumes and moved five graduates into interviews.
Public agencies want these graduates too. Yume Kitasei, commissioner of the NYC Department of Citywide Administrative Services, told our students: "We have a great need of people with your skill set, with CDLs."
